Kroger Recalls Yellowfin Tuna After Numerous Cases of Scombroid Poisoning

UNITED STATES – According to an online news article published by abccolumbia.com, Kroger has recalled yellowfin tuna sold at stores in several states, including numerous states in the South, after multiple reports of scombroid poisoning. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says 16 cases have been reported to date.*

The recall applies to packaged yellowfin tuna sold at Kroger stores in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The fish would have been purchased in a Styrofoam and cellophane container in the fresh meat section of the store.

The FDA stated that it was working with Kroger and the fish distributor to ensure that all of the recalled product was removed from store shelves. It appears that the fish was not properly stored at some point prior to sale, and consumers who eat it can develop scombroid poisoning.

Scombroid poisoning is a condition in which someone consumes a food product (ordinarily a fish product) that has become contaminated with bacteria due to improper storage. The bacteria present on the fish produce the scombroid toxin, which leads to illness in many people who are exposed.

Symptoms of scombroid poisoning include hives, flushing, itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and fever. People with symptoms may believe they are experiencing an allergic reaction or coming down with the flu. Symptoms will usually appear within 30 minutes to an hour after eating the contaminated product.

Consumers who bought yellowfin tuna at a Kroger store in one of the above states are urged to discard the product or return it to the store for a refund. The product should not be consumed or served. Consumers who develop symptoms of scombroid poisoning should seek medical care and contact the Health Department to report the illness.
