The FDA is Expanding Technology to Increase Food Safety

July 27, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA, believes expanding technology currently in development could make food safer for consumption. In a recent article appearing on the website Food Dive, the FDA’s commissioner recently announced that the FDA released a program called the “New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint.”  The FDA designed the program to trace foodborne illnesses and to create an awareness of the need for food safety by using tools and developing business models, in conjunction with the modernization of retail food chains, to reduce food poisoning. The Blueprint is a ten-year program the FDA designed to increase the impact of the Food Safety Modernization Act, which became federal law in 2011.

The FDA hopes its Blueprint will be the primary model for food safety in the world. The impact of the Food Safety Modernization Act’s mandates has been felt slowly. After ten years in existence, the FDA took initial steps to use a proactive and digitally-inspired approach to disseminating information. However, the Blueprint’s guidelines were delayed by four months because of COVID-19.

The FDA announced that it would use emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, e-commerce, so-called “big data,” end-to-end tracing, and predictive models to modernize, and therefore increase food safety. Machine learning and “A.I.” will be employed at ports of entry in the United States. Importers will use A.I. to screen food products entering the U.S. to ensure compliance with domestic safety standards.

Several companies and food safety experts have advocated for increased use of interactive packaging and blockchain technology to trace products through supply chains, which will help consumers understand where their food comes from. Most companies do not use the technology currently available to increase food safety.
