Florida Nursing Home Resident’s Family Learns He Had COVID-19
BRADENTON, FL- Fox13news.com writes that a nursing home resident in Florida died of COVID-19, but that his family was not informed of the spread of the virus through the home until after the man had passed away from the disease. The victim’s relatives now want to know why they were not told about the outbreak until after the man’s death.*
Reports indicate that the Braden River Rehabilitation Center lost eleven of its residents to the outbreak of the virus. The Manatee County facility is one of two that share the same management. The other facility, the Riviera Palms Rehabilitation Center, also suffered an outbreak of the virus. Nearly two-dozen people died from the coronavirus at the two facilities, and over 100 people contracted the disease at those locations.
The family stated that they did not know how the man died until after they saw the death certificate. The man’s daughter stated that when she spoke to her father, he sounded congested and tired. She said that the closure of the facilities prevented her from visiting her father, which she regularly did every day.
A nurse later informed her that her dad was not doing well and that he had pneumonia. The woman was allowed to see her father one time prior to his death. When she learned that he had died from COVID-19, she was concerned that she could have exposed her family to the virus, too, after having visited him. She also explained that she felt that the home had betrayed her by failing to tell her that her father had contracted the virus.
Following the resident’s death, his family received a letter addressed to him that stated that the facility had a confirmed case of the virus.
