Second Recall Issued by GM Over Defective Brakes

February 13, 2020

USA - Upi.com writes that GM issued a second recall of thousands of vehicles after the repairs used to address an earlier problem led to further braking problems. In December of 2019, GM recalled Chevy Silverados, Cadillac CT6s, and GMC Sierras in order to conduct repairs on those vehicles’ brakes. A software error in the braking controls caused the anti-lock system to turn off. The warning lights in the vehicles would not illuminate to alert the driver, therefore increasing the risks of collisions.*

Following the repairs, GM stated that about between 1,600 and 1,700 vehicle owners complained that their electronic brakes were failing and that the dashboard illuminating warnings are not working properly.

GM now believes that the updates caused issues with the electronic brake control modules that occur when the driver uses the car’s OnStar feature. Drivers can use the OnStar app to start their vehicles remotely. Once the owners did so, they began to notice issues with the cars’ systems.

About 162,000 GM vehicles were repaired in the original recall. The manufacturer now has a repair that will fix both the initial issue as well as the newly reported error.

Well over 500,000 vehicles from 2019 were affected by the flaws. GM has told its manufacturers not to sell any of the impacted models until they have conducted the updates.

Vehicle recalls are common in the United States. In many cases, the issues are minor and present little risk to consumers. In other cases, the recalls address serious safety concerns. The vast majority of recalls are issued proactively by car manufacturers in order to fix a problem before they end up being liable to consumers for injuries and damages.
