Honda, Toyota Recall Six Million Vehicles for Airbag Defects
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report, car manufacturers Honda and Toyota have recalled more than six million vehicles because of airbag defects. Both of the manufacturers have issued two different recalls related to airbag issues.
It does not appear that the airbags are Takata brand or are otherwise part of the Takata airbag recalls.*
Honda’s first recall involves improper seals on the airbags in certain Honda and Acura vehicles. The seals can allow moisture and air inside of the system and lead to degradation of the inflator over time. As a result, the airbag can deploy too early or can deploy with too much force. The defects can lead to injuries. Close to 199,000 vehicles are in this recall, including:
- 1998-2000 Honda Accord
- 1996-2000 Honda Civic
- 1997-2001 Honda CR-V
- 1998-2001 Honda Odyssey
- 1997-1999, 2001-2002 Acura CL
- 1997-2000 Acura EL
- 1998-2003 Acura RL
- 1999-2001 Acura TL
- 2001-2002 Acura MDX
Honda’s other recall involves airbags that might have been fitted in vehicles after they left the factory. It is not clear what models are included in this recall as of yet, but the article indicated it affects more than 85,000 vehicles.
Toyota’s first recall involves the potential for airbags to explode and send metal pieces into the vehicle cabins. This can lead to injuries to anyone in the vehicle. The recall affects 17,022 vehicles, including:
- 1998-2000 Toyota Rav4
- 1997-1999 Toyota Celica
- 1998-1999 Toyota Paseo
Toyota’s other recall involves airbags that might not deploy in the event of a crash. The airbag computer systems are vulnerable to interference, according to Toyota, and can fail if an electric disturbance occurs. The issue could be linked to as many as eight deaths in the United States. This recall affects more than 407,000 vehicles. The models included in this recall were not yet provided.
