E. coli Outbreak Prompts Lettuce Recall
USA - The FDA issued a recall of romaine lettuce produced in Salinas Valley, California because of possible contamination with E. coli bacteria, according to the LATIMES.COM.*
The bacteria sickened 40 people across sixteen states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 28 of the victims required hospitalization to treat the illness.
The warning states that consumers who are not able to determine where their romaine lettuce or lettuce mix came from should throw the produce away. The recall impacts Caesar salad and spring mixes, packaged romaine, baby romaine, hearts, and whole heads of romaine. A similar recall occurred last year when 43 people became ill after consuming lettuce in 12 states.
Missa Bay, LLC, a New Jersey-based company that produces salad products, issued a voluntary recall of more than 75,000 pounds of their products after their Caesar salad mix caused documented illnesses in Maryland.
By the time the company issued the recall, the products included should have been discarded anyway because they would have been expired.
People working in the lettuce industry in California are frustrated with repeat outbreaks. The illnesses associated with these products are impacting the industry. Neighboring Arizona, which also produces romaine, took steps to more clearly label their products in an effort to avoid having consumers stop purchasing them.
E. coli can cause symptoms, such as, vomiting, severe abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The symptoms occur around three or four days after the person consumed the contaminated food. In some instances, E. coli can lead to death. An outbreak in the spring of 2018 killed five people and sickened hundreds, highlighting the seriousness of this foodborne illness.
