Increased Risk of Fractures identified with Long-Term PPI Use
INDIA- The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration ("MFDA") in India recently instructed drug manufacturers to print warning labels on proton pump inhibitors ("PPIs"), stating that the drugs can lead to kidney injuries, according to THEHITAVADA.com. Now, companies must include a warning of "acute kidney injury" and then file compliance reports in India. Some experts are claiming that the warning does not go far enough because it fails to include other well-documented side effects of the long-term use of the drugs. Many in the medical community are disturbed by the purported overuse of PPIs, which are used to treat acid reflux and heartburn.*
According to the report as well as MFDA, while the drug will include the warning regarding risks to a patient's kidneys, some are concerned that the warning does not include other possible complications with the medication. One study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association ("JAMA") indicated that patients who use PPIs for more than one year could have a 44 percent higher risk of experiencing a hip fracture. Patients who continue to take the drug for more than one year may increase their risk of fracture by even higher percentages. The correlation between fractures and PPIs is likely the result of reduced calcium absorption in persons taking acid inhibitors for long periods of time. The lack of acid in the stomach can prevent effective calcium absorption, according to JAMA.
