GM Recalls Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 Trucks Over Faulty Seatbelts

December 01, 2019

USA- Ncadvertiser.com writes that GM is recalling more than 640,000 pickup trucks because the vehicle's seatbelts can cause fires. The recall impacts Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks, models from 2019, and 2020. The trucks are equipped with a high-tech type of seatbelt which tightens prior to a collision through the use of a small explosion that moves a piston.*

Reports indicate that the small explosion can cause a hot gas leak through a bracket that then sets the vehicle’s carpet on fire. All of the models have carpet flooring, and most of the cars recalled are located in North America.

So far, two vehicles caught on fire because of the defect. The repairs involve closing the opening so that the gas does not leak onto the carpet. Consumers who purchased one of these vehicles can bring the car to the dealer for a free repair. The company did not give a date for the start of the recall.

Recalls are frequent in the automobile industry. Many recalls involve minor problems that are not likely to lead to severe injuries, but some can be life-threatening. Car owners need to make sure that they are up to date with the recalls on their vehicles. Manufacturers will typically provide fixes at no charge to the consumer.

When a defect causes a severe safety hazard, drivers might be advised not to use the vehicle until the repairs are performed.

If a defect leads to accidents or injuries, the company can be held liable for the harm done by the vehicle. Because manufacturers face possible lawsuits when a defect causes injuries, most carmakers are proactive about issuing recalls even when the risks are relatively minor.
