Former Advisor to the FDA Says LASIK Eye Surgeries Should Stop
USA- Foxbusiness.com writes that a former advisor to the Food and Drug Administration is arguing that LASIK eye surgery should not be conducted in the United States. The procedure first came out around twenty years ago and the advisor, who is a doctor, originally voted to approve the procedure but in light of years’ worth of data, now feels that the surgery is not safe.*
LASIK eye surgery uses lasers to reshape a person’s cornea to improve their vision and ability to focus. The FDA reports that surveys of people who have undergone the procedure indicate that 95% of people who have this surgery conducted end up happy with the results of the procedure.
However, the physician and former FDA advisor says that numbers indicate somewhere between 10% and 30% of people who have LASIK eye surgery end up experiencing complications. Some reported symptoms include severe dry eye syndrome, starbursts, halos, glare, and double vision. Serious risks include vision loss and debilitating impacts on a person's night vision.
There are also long-term safety considerations for the procedure as doctors have only been performing it since 1998. The FDA does not seem to agree with the former advisor’s concerns. After being questioned about the possible risks of LASIK, the Administration reports that they have not found any new risks associated with the procedure.
The doctor says that people who have this procedure performed have healthy eyes. LASIK is not performed to treat a disease or serious health concern. According to the former FDA advisor, people considering LASIK would be better suited going out and getting glasses.
