Johnson & Johnson Recalls Baby Powder After FDA Discovers Asbestos Contamination

October 25, 2019

UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from reuters.com, health care company Johnson & Johnson is recalling thousands of bottles of its iconic talcum powder after a test from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found the product contaminated with asbestos. Consumers are urged to discard the affected powder.*

The recall applies to 33,000 bottles of Johnson’s Baby Powder manufactured in the U.S. during the year 2018. The FDA test showed trace amounts of asbestos, which could lead to serious health effects in consumers. Asbestos has been linked to the cancer, mesothelioma, and a host of other serious health conditions.

This is the first time regulators have found asbestos in Johnson’s Baby Powder, despite the fact that a multitude of lawsuits are pending against the company that allege the powder has been contaminated for years. Johnson & Johnson currently faces more than 15,000 lawsuits related to development of cancer after use of its talcum powder. Some of these suits allege that the powder caused consumers to develop mesothelioma, while others allege the powder caused consumers to develop ovarian cancer.

In response to news of the recall, shares of Johnson & Johnson fell by more than six percent. The FDA indicated only one lot of the baby powder tested showed asbestos contamination. Throughout the course of litigation, Johnson & Johnson has claimed its talc powder has never contained asbestos. The company is standing by its statements about the safety of its powder, stating that the recall is extremely unusual and inconsistent with its own testing.

The company appears to be calling the test results into question, though the FDA is standing by the quality and validity of its findings. Johnson & Johnson said it would be conducting an investigation into the contaminated powder to determine the source of the asbestos.
