School Bus Recall Issued Due to Safety Concerns
HIGH POINT, NC- Myfox8.com writes that more than 50,000 school buses manufactured by Thomas Built have been recalled over a problem with the vehicles’ impact absorption.*
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the buses were might have been built with styrene blocks in the seats. Those blocks might not provide adequate shock absorption in the event of a crash. The blocks are in the back of the seat over the steel frames. The recall applies to models made between 2014 and 2020.
The manufacturer is providing repairs to the buses to increase the padding and ability of the buses to protect passengers in the event of a crash.
School buses are built with safety features that are more stringent than the features that are required by other passenger buses. When safety advocates push for seatbelts on school buses, the response from many is that the addition of seatbelts is unnecessary because the vehicles have so many other safety protections that help to prevent injuries in a collision, mainly, the buses' ability to absorb impacts. The buses are also designed to be highly visible to other drivers and, therefore, less likely to be overlooked and involved in a collision.
The recall of Thompson Built buses will start on December 2, 2019.
While defective or inadequate protections on school buses will likely be concerning to parents, it should be noted that students are statistically safer on buses than in passenger vehicles. The chances of students making it safely to school are far greater when they ride a school bus than when a parent drives or when they walk. The riskiest part of riding on a school bus is walking around the bus as a pedestrian.
