Jury Awards Man $8 Billion Dollars in Risperdal Undesired Breast Growth Lawsuit
Johnson & Johnson Ordered to Compensate Man for Eight Billion Dollars Over Undesired Breast Growth Associated with Taking Risperdal
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report at finance.yahoo.com, the American drugs giant Johnson & Johnson (JNY) has been ordered to compensate a man in the amount of $8 billion due to damages he sustained over the growth of breast tissue associated with taking Risperdal as a child.*
A jury in Philadelphia awarded the 26-year-old victim eight billion dollars in damages in addition to the $680,000 he was already awarded back in 2015.
The victim had been prescribed the antipsychotic drug Risperdal in 2003 as a child. The drug is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well as autism. The victim developed breast tissue after consuming the drug, which caused him to be humiliated and experience pain in his chest, according to the man’s lawyers. Moreover, his attorneys assert that JNJ’s subsidiary Jansen did not apprise the man that the drug could cause of the development of female breast tissue. The verdict in this case was the first time a jury ruled on the matter.
The jury specifically ruled that JNJ made a “pervasive nationwide effort to illegally market Risperdal and downplay its very serious risks on a systemic level.” Apparently, the man’s lawyers are also representing several thousands of other individuals who have similar claims against JNJ.
In response, JNJ indicated in a statement that the eight billion dollar award was “grossly disproportionate with the initial compensatory award in this case” and “a clear violation of due process. We will be immediately moving to set aside this excessive and unfounded verdict.”
