Report: Recalled Baby Sleepers Remain Listed for Sale Online
UNITED STATES – According to an online news story reported at chicago.suntimes.com, numerous baby sleepers that have been recalled this year due to dangerous risks to children remain on sale despite the recalls. The sleepers have been recalled because children can roll over in them and suffocate.*
Earlier this year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 4.7 million units of the Fisher Price Rock ‘n’ Play after receiving more than a dozen reports of babies tragically dying in the sleepers. About two weeks later, CPSC announced that another kind of baby sleeper would also be recalled, including almost 700,000 units of the Kids II Rocking Sleeper. Next on the recall list from CPSC were several types of sleepers made by Dorel.
However, the news report from the Chicago Sun-Times says that despite these recalls and the serious dangers children can be exposed to in them, several online companies have the items for sale. This includes online sales from Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist. It is illegal to sell or resell products that have been recalled because of safety issues, and these online companies say they their policies prevent the sale of recalled items.
A spokesperson for eBay said that the listings would be removed. A spokesperson for Facebook said that an investigation would be conducted and that Facebook had already removed several similar postings. The platform says that sellers are responsible themselves for ensuring that the products they have listed are not subject to any current recalls. Craigslist did not respond to reporters’ requests for comment.
With many brands of lookalikes are on the market, safety experts say that even if the specific products have not been recalled, parents should ditch their inclined baby sleepers. The risk is proven at this point, they say, and it is too great to ignore.
