Alarming Number of Injuries Caused by E-Scooters Uncovered by Safety Investigation
According to an online report at abc3340.com, if you have walked around a major city across the United States, it is likely for you to see electric scooters around the area. Or quite possibly, you have ridden on one yourself. E-scooters are battery powered vehicles that can ride up to fifteen miles per hour, which is what makes them so popular. But with all the excitement e-scooters have to offer, they raise a very serious question as to their safety. Per a Consumer Reports investigation, they have uncovered that severe e-scooter accidents are occurring more frequently than expected.*
The Consumer Reports reached out to hospitals, municipalities, and universities in forty-seven cities across the United States that have the ride-sharing e-scooter companies Bird or Lime. After an analysis of the data, the Consumer Reports found that fifteen hundred people across the United States have been injured in an e-scooter accident since late 2017.
According to the Associated Press, it reports that eleven scooter related deaths occurred in the beginning of 2018. Consumer Reports interviewed doctors at several emergency departments across the United States who have reported that they have treated numerous e-scooter drivers with bone fractures and traumatic brain injuries. Just recently, an eighteen-year-old girl was ejected from her e-scooter after slamming into a pothole. She is currently being hospitalized due to the serious nature of her injuries.
Pursuant to a recent Consumer Reports nationwide survey, over half of e-scooter operators do not wear a helmet. Lime and Bird have indicated that safety is their number one priority and that they are willing to work with municipalities to ensure the safety of e-scooters.
In the State of Alabama, the Legislature recently passed a law that allows municipalities to promulgate their own rules regarding e-scooter use within their city walls. Last year, e-scooters became popular in Birmingham however, the company was shut down because they failed to have a proper license to operate their business.
