Dougherty County Coroner Talks About Safety in and Around Water
ALBANY, GA – According to an online news report at walb.com, Memorial Day, the unofficial beginning of summer, is a time when many people take the water, which could lead to serious injuries and even death.*
With the potential for record breaking hot temperatures this coming weekend, many will be in the water of a lake, the ocean, or a swimming pool. However, the more that people take to water, the greater likelihood of injuries and even death. That is why the Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler is sending the message that he wants you to have fun, albeit safely.
Fowler notes that if you do not know how to swim, you must make sure that you are with someone who does. It is also crucial that the person who cannot swim wear a life jacket at all times when around the water.
Fowler further provides that if you or a loved one will be in open water where the bottom is not visible, you should wear a life jacket since anything can happen, including cramps in the body, that could cause you to become incapacitated – leading to the potential for injury and even death.
Even if you consider yourself to be a strong swimmer, you must always be alert and familiar with your surroundings.
“We want the holiday to be a safe weekend, so that no one has to call me, that is what I want. Let me stay home and barbecue and enjoy life. Sometimes I just keep my clothes on just waiting, because I know sooner or later, someone is going to do something, have an accident," says Fowler.
The coroner last provides that you must be extra vigilant if you will be drinking on or around water. He urges people who make this choice to make smart decisions about one’s safety.
