U.S. Lawmakers Pushing for School Bus Seat Belt Requirements

May 26, 2019

UNITED STATES – According to a story published online at advertisernewssouth.com, United States lawmakers are pushing for legislation that would require seat belts on all school buses. The legislation campaign was announced close to the one-year anniversary of the death of a young student who lost her life in a school bus crash.*

Congressman Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey announced an initiative on May 14 to pass a bipartisan bill called the Secure Every Child Under the Right Equipment Standards Act (SECURES Act). The bill would require three-point seat belts to be installed on all school buses in the country.

The SECURES Act not only requires seat belts that involve lap and should restraints, it also entails school districts’ use of techniques to make sure students wear the seat belts. It further requires constant monitoring for school bus drivers, including a system that will alert districts within 24 hours of any bus driver traffic violations recorded by the Department of Transportation.

The bill, also known as Miranda’s Law, is named after the victim of a school bus accident in Paramus, New Jersey, in May 2018. Gottheimer will be campaigning for passage of the bill with the father of the victim.

“We are here to help turn tragedy into hope for other children and families,” Gottheimer said. “[The victim’s father] will be joining me in Washington beginning this spring, so that he can tell his story to members of Congress on why our communities so desperately need this bipartisan legislation. Miranda’s Law and the SECURES Act will help save lives. And there’s nothing partisan about that.”
