Pedestrian Fatalities Increasing in State of Georgia
GEORGIA – According to an online news report published by ajc.com, pedestrian fatalities are increasing in the state of Georgia. The increase in Georgia is reflective of a trend around the country, as pedestrian deaths are reaching record highs in the United States, according to recent data.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation indicates that 260 pedestrians died due to collisions with vehicles in 2017, and more than 110 died in the first half of 2018. The figure from the first part of 2018 represents a sharp increase of 16 percent from the same time period in 2017. And the total pedestrian deaths in 2017 was also up from 2016, when 232 pedestrians were killed on Georgia’s roads.
The Georgia DOT shows that the total number of pedestrians killed in Georgia in 2017 was double the number of pedestrian fatalities that occurred in the state in 2011. Most of these fatalities occur in Fulton County and DeKalb County, and the majority of them occur at night.
Experts suggest that some of the reason for the rise in pedestrian fatalities in Georgia and around the country is an increase in drivers traveling in SUVs and trucks. With gas prices lower, more Americans have turned to larger vehicles, which are more likely to cause serious injury and death when they hit pedestrians.
Other reasons for the rise in pedestrian deaths include distraction, both on the part of drivers and pedestrians. Drivers need to put away their cell phones, say experts, as do pedestrians. The effort to reduce pedestrian fatalities must involve changes by both drivers and pedestrians, experts have said.
