Jury Awards California Couple $2 Billion in Roundup Cancer Case

OAKLAND, CA. – According to an online news report posted at cnn.com, a jury awarded a California couple more than $2 billion in the latest trial alleging the weed killer Roundup is linked to cancer. The husband and wife in this case reportedly used Roundup for decades and were both diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.*

The jury in Oakland, California, handed down a verdict May 13 in favor of a husband and wife in their 70s who alleged that decades of Roundup use led to development of cancer in both of them. According to reports, they sprayed Roundup on their property for weed control for more than 30 years, the couple said, and were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma only four years apart. 

Monsanto, the maker of Roundup and a subsidiary of Bayer, moved to separate the trials of the husband and wife, but the judge overseeing the case allowed the couple to take one case to trial. The jury on the case awarded the couple compensatory damages of more than $55 million and added $2 billion in punitive damages to the verdict. 

This is the third trial verdict issued in favor of plaintiffs who have filed suit against Monsanto and Bayer. In August 2018, a jury awarded a groundskeeper $289 million against the Roundup makers, a sum that was later reduced to $78 million by the judge in the case. In March 2019, another jury awarded a man $80 million in his Roundup case. 

Monsanto and Bayer have pledged to appeal the recent verdicts, maintaining that the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, is completely safe. Thousands more cases are currently pending in a multidistrict litigation against the companies.
