FAA Launches #FlySafe Campaign Aimed at Pilot Education
UNITED STATES – According to an online report posted by verticalmag.com, the Federal Aviation Administration has launched a campaign called #FlySafe, which is aimed at educating pilots in the general aviation community about prevention of loss of control accidents.*
A loss of control accident occurs when a plane departs from its intended path in the course of a controlled flight. The loss of control can occur when a plane goes into an unintended flight regime and stalls or spins. This might catch a pilot by surprise and place crew and passengers in danger. The FAA’s #FlySafe campaign discusses what pilots can do to safely navigate these situations.
According to a press release from the FAA about the campaign, more than 380 people were killed in 226 accidents during the timeframe from October 2017 to September 2018. The FAA said that loss of control was the leading cause of these fatal accidents. Loss of control can occur during any phase of a flight, the FAA says, and it accounts for one fatal accident every four days.
FAA’s #FlySafe campaign comes at a time when heightened scrutiny has been placed on aircraft safety and pilot training. This is due to the grounding of an entire line of Boeing airplanes after hundreds of people were killed in two separate plane crashes in early 2019. Investigators found that the 737 MAX line from Boeing had a sensor that could malfunction and lead to continual loss of altitude.
Boeing is in the process of reworking its 737 MAX planes in hopes they will be cleared for flight again. In the meantime, the FAA and airlines are focusing increased attention on flight safety and pilot education.
