Motorcyclists are 28 Times More Likely to Sustain Fatal Injuries in an Accident

May 11, 2019

MACON, GEORGIA – According to an online news article published by wgxa.tv, motorcyclists are twenty-eight (28) times more likely to suffer fatal injuries if they are involved in an accident.*

Georgia has seen a substantial increase in the number of motorcycle accident fatalities over the past few decades.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 28 more likely to die in an accident than a driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident.  Such numbers are not surprising to many Georgia motorcyclists.

As Georgia sees warmer weather, the motorcyclists are out in full force.  However, many of these motorcyclists are victims of preventable accidents with motor vehicles.  According to one motorcyclist, many drivers no longer have respect for motorcyclists on the roadway and does not consider it a good excuse to say a driver simply did not see a motorcycle.  This same motorcyclist believes that distracted driving may be to blame for many motorcycle accidents in Georgia.

Just in the last month, three motorcyclists have died in Bibb County, and a recent accident in Macon put a motorcyclist in the hospital.  Since the end of 2018, Bibb County has seen 45 reported motorcycle accidents, a number that may continue to rise as 2019 continues.

Sharing the Road is the Key to Safety and Survival

While most people know that they need to “share the road,” such words end up being just that – words.  Many drivers may feel they have priority on the roads and that motorcyclists must take steps to drive around vehicles.  Likewise, some motorcyclists may believe they can take advantage of their small size to avoid obeying traffic laws that all motor vehicles must follow.  All motorists, regardless of cars, trucks, motorcycles, or bicycles, must follow the same laws, pay attention, and treat one another with respect.  Otherwise, needless accidents and tragic deaths may continue.
