The Month of May is Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month; Drivers Urged to Share the Road

May 11, 2019

BREVARD COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at spacecoastdaily.com, May is Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month.  Florida motorists are urged to drive safely when around these more vulnerable road users.*

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is urging drivers statewide to safely share the roadway with bicycles and motorcycles in the hopes that this will reduce the number of crashes involving these types of road users.

According to the online report, the “FLHSMV’s Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month is in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Police Chiefs Association, Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Trucking Association.”

“Whether you operate a large truck, passenger vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle, take responsibility for your role on the road,” said FLHSMV’s Executive Director.

Per the report, drivers must always look two times for other users of the roadway, exercise caution when switching lanes, and provide other drivers with a safe amount of space.

Per statewide statistics, in 2018 preliminarily, there were eight thousand nine hundred and ninety seven motorcycle accidents and six thousand five hundred forty six bicycle accidents in Florida. This means that, on average, there were over three hundred motorcycle and bicycle accidents every week that occurred across the state.  The total number of fatalities for motorcycle and bicycle accidents was six hundred thirty.

“Sharing our roadways is everyone’s responsibility and drivers must stay alert for motorcycles and bicycles,” said the director of the Florida Highway Patrol. “Safety is FHP’s number one priority, use caution to ensure Florida’s vulnerable road users arrive safely to their destination.”
