Construction Co. Preliminarily Agrees to Pay $42M for FIU Bridge Collapse

FLORIDA – According to an online news story reported at wsvn.com, a construction company has preliminarily agreed to a settlement of $42 million in connection with the collapse of a Florida bridge. The structure, which was a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University, collapsed last year, killing six people.*

The construction company Magnum Construction Management (also known as Munilla Construction Management) built the pedestrian bridge on the campus of Florida International University. In March 2018, the bridge fell and caused injuries to eight people and the deaths of six people. 

After the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board launched an investigation to determine what happened, and the surviving victims and families of the people who died filed a lawsuit against the construction company. Several other entities were also named as defendants in the lawsuit. 

On May 2, according to WSVN, Magnum Construction Management agreed to a tentative deal involving a settlement with the victims and families for the sum of $42 million. It is not clear when the deal will be made final. 

At this time, the NTSB has not released the results of its investigation, so it is still unclear what caused the collapse. The bridge spanned 174 feet across Eighth Street and was supported by towers at both ends. It weighed 950 tons and was designed to connect the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of FIU to the City of Sweetwater.
