Multiple Electric Vehicles Spontaneously Combust and Catch Fire in China, All Within a Few Days

May 07, 2019

SHANGHAI, CHINA – According to an online news article published by abacusnews.com, three electric vehicles spontaneously combusted and caught fire within the same week in Shanghai, China.*

On April 21, 2019, a Tesla parked in an underground garage in Shanghai, China spontaneously combusted and caught fire, which is not the first Tesla to catch fire.  The fire destroyed not only the Tesla but also two vehicles parked next to the Tesla in the parking garage.  The cause of the Tesla explosion is unknown.

However, Tesla is not the only electric car manufacturer facing scrutiny. Two additional electric vehicles manufactured by two separate Chinese car manufacturers also caught fire in China in the same week.  More than 800 miles from Shanghai, in the city of Xi’an, a second electric car, manufactured by Nio, a Chinese company, caught fire.  Nio released a statement indicating that a short circuit of the battery caused the vehicle to spontaneously combust and catch fire. The vehicle was at a repair shop at the time of the explosion.

A third electric car caught fire in China only a few days later.  An electric SUV manufactured by BYD, a Chinese company, exploded and caught fire in the city of Wuhan.  Luckily, no individuals were injured in any of the three electric vehicle explosions and fires.

Tesla is already facing scrutiny for prior instances of its electric vehicles catching fire in the United States, raising concerns for anyone wishing to purchase an electric vehicle in the future.  Tesla and Nio have not released statements regarding the causes or potential causes of the two explosions in China.  A thorough investigation may reveal what went wrong and what needs to be done to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
