California Man Injured After E-Cigarette Battery Explodes in Pocket

May 01, 2019

SONOMA COUNTY, CA. – According to an online news report published at abc7news.com, a California man was seriously injured after an e-cigarette battery exploded in his pocket. The man says the incident occurred in March, and he sustained third-degree burns to his leg because of the explosion.*

The 42-year-old man, who is a construction worker in Sonoma County, California, said he had a spare battery for his e-cigarette in his pants pocket one day in March, and it suddenly exploded. He was wearing heavy work pants at the time, and the exploded pen burned through them and caused serious injuries to his leg, he said.

“The damage was done, and all the skin on the back of my leg was missing,” the man told reporters. “So I went to the emergency room as fast as I could.”

The man says he sustained third-degree burns and required skin grafts. He says he does not know when he will be able to go back to work again. He also does not know when he will be able to ride his motorcycle again. The man is one in a growing population of people injured from e-cigarette explosions.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that between 2015 and 2017, more than 2,000 people sought emergency treatment because of e-cigarette and vape pen explosions. These people sustained injuries including burns, amputations, and even death. The FDA has been working on proposed regulations for vape pens, not only because of explosion injuries but also because of youth addiction.

In response to widespread serious injuries, e-cigarette manufacturers have blamed consumers, saying they are using the pens and batteries inappropriately.
