Atlanta Launches E-Scooter Campaign to Encourage Safe Riding

April 29, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – According to a news report posted online at atlanta.curbed.com, the City of Atlanta, Georgia, has launched a campaign designed to encourage safe riding on e-scooters. The campaign, called “Scoot Smart,” urges scooter operators and drivers to use good judgment and keep other motorists and walkers under consideration.*

Atlanta is not ready to place a ban on e-scooters in the city, but local officials know that something needs to be done. The City Council recently passed regulations on the two-wheeled vehicles, but people are still not following the rules. Recent figures estimate that as many as 8,000 scooters are deployed in the city, with many of those scattered all over the sidewalks.

The Atlanta City Planning Department said that it had received more than 2,500 reports regarding improper scooter parking and shareable bicycle parking. When these reports come in, the vehicles are impounded. The city realized that more effort to address scooter safety and scooter etiquette needed to be made.

The city has now launched a campaign that it’s calling “Scoot Smart.” Planning Commissioner Team Keane appears on a video announcing the campaign, telling people to not be “knuckleheads” with their scooters.

People in Atlanta reportedly used e-scooters to travel 380,000 miles around the city in just March 2018. Almost one-third of those miles are replacements for traveling in cars. The city also accumulated more than $450,000 in fees for the scooters. Because the vehicles seem to have a benefit, city officials are hoping the campaign will address some lingering issues regarding e-scooters.
