Police in Milledgeville, Georgia, Seeking Approval for Cameras in School Zones
MILLEDGEVILLE, GA. – According to an online news story posted at 13wmaz.com, police officers in Milledgeville, Georgia, are seeking approval from the city council to install cameras in school zones. They believe the cameras will help reduce speeding, and therefore accidents, in school zones by holding drivers accountable.*
Around 5,000 students cross a pedestrian crosswalk outside of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville each day, according to reporters. The crosswalk on Elbert Street is one of several under consideration for a camera system that would allow police officers to enforce speed limits around schools.
The speed limit in the school zone that includes the crosswalk is 30 mph, but students told reporters that it seems like drivers exceed that limit frequently.
“There’s many times that we’ve looked at each other, me and my friends, and we’ve been like, ‘Oh my gosh, we almost died because that person’s being irresponsible,’” said one Georgia Military College student who crosses the street several times a day for class.
In conjunction with Red Speed, the Milledgeville Police Department logged speeds on Elbert Street, and according to the college’s president, William Caldwell, officers found that approximately 11,000 vehicles travel by the school every day. About 165 of those vehicles are driving over the speed limit by 10 mph or more. Caldwell said he was supportive of a camera system to keep students safe.
“If you travel 10 miles or more over the speed limit, it’s going to snap your picture with a date-time group, capture your license, and then the owner of the vehicle, as the chief explained to me, will have to pay the fine.”
