Tesla CEO Says Company is Winning Race Toward Full Vehicle Autonomy
UNITED STATES – According to a story posted online at newstalkflorida.com, the CEO of Tesla says the company is winning the race toward full vehicle autonomy and will be reviewing the necessary technology this month. Critics say the company is drumming up hype that it cannot back up with real data.*
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the technology that will propel Tesla vehicles into the world of full autonomy is going to be debuted to investors in April. He said in a recent interview that Tesla would be releasing vehicles that can drive without any human intervention no later than 2020.
“I could be wrong, but it appears to be the case that Tesla is vastly ahead of everyone,” Musk said.
If it is true that Tesla will release fully self-driving vehicles into the mainstream market in 2020, then the company is indeed many steps ahead of other developers. So many steps ahead, in fact, that skeptics say there is no way Musk’s statements are accurate.
“It’s all hype,” said Steven Shladover, a former research engineer with the University of California, Berkeley.
Shladover has been in the business of self-driving development for 45 years and says Musk’s projections are not based in reality.
“The technology does not exist to do what he is claiming,” Shladover said. “He doesn’t have it, and neither does anybody else.”
Most experts in the business do not believe that completely self-driving vehicles will be mainstream for another 10 years or more. Numerous companies in the United States and around the world are working toward testing autonomous vehicles in small regions.
