Infant Sleeper Swing Still on Sale in Florida After Consumer Warning, Recall
FLORIDA – According to an online news report from abc-7.com, an infant sleeper swing is still in sale in parts of Florida, despite a consumer warning about infant deaths associated with the product and a recall of the product. The swing, manufactured by Fisher Price, was the subject of a recent warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that was upgraded to a recall.*
Earlier in the month of April, the CPSC issued a consumer warning in which it stated that it had received 10 reports of infants dying after rolling over while unrestrained in the Fisher Price Rock ‘N Play swing. The alert said that children older than 3 months should not be placed in the swing.
On April 12, the CPSC upgraded the warning to a recall, announcing that it was now aware of more than 30 infant deaths associated with the product, and a recall had been initiated. ABC 7 reports that parents need to be aware of the recall because the Rock ‘N Play is still on the shelves of several stores in Southwest Florida.
Children’s safety experts and medical professionals say that devices like the Rock ‘N Play, which is a moveable, curved bassinet, should not be used for sleeping.
“Really, the only safe place for a baby to be sleeping is in a crib or a play pen, a pack and play, where they’re flat on their back,” said Lorena Rodriguez, children’s advocate at Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Fisher Price is offering refunds or vouchers for Rock ‘N Plays purchased by parents. More information can be found on the website for the CPSC.
