Injury Rates Increase with Growing Popularity of E-Scooters
UNITED STATES – The rate of injuries from scooter accidents has been increasing with the growing popularity of e-scooters, according to an online news story from gpbnews.org. The scooters can be found now in cities across the United States, and safety experts are beginning to see problems with the new mode of transportation.
While stand-up scooters were first released in the 1980s, the concept of for-rent e-scooters in big cities has only been around a couple of years. People across the nation have a similar sentiment about the scooter craze: It came out of nowhere. Almost overnight, thousands of scooters dropped into cities for people to rent and ride.
The scooters have undoubtedly brought a convenient, fun option for people who need to travel small distances — from the subway station to an office building, for instance — but they have become increasingly associated with accidents and injuries. Fractured bones and head injuries are some of the most common doctors are seeing in their emergency room patients these days.
“Almost during every shift, you’ll see somebody come in with an extremity injury or a head injury or a laceration or something along those lines,” said Dr. Kate Douglass at Washington University Hospital.
Douglass said the way that people ride scooters increases the risk of injuries. Dr. Joanne Elmore, of the University of California, Los Angeles, is seeing the same thing. She says the vast majority of her injured patients are also not wearing helmets.
“[Scooters are] immensely easy to use,” Elmore said, “and … given this ease, many of us underestimate the potential for public health and trauma-related issues.”
