Report: Destin, Sarasota Among Top Cities in Florida for DUI Fatality Crashes

FLORIDA – According to a news story reported online at miamiherald.com, Destin and Sarasota are among the top cities in Florida for DUI fatality vehicle crashes. A consumer information group recently reported on where in Florida deadly DUI accidents were most common.*

According to the report from ValuePenguin, Destin, Sarasota, Key Largo, and Key West were the cities in Florida with the highest rates of deadly DUI accidents. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach, Miami Lakes, Palmetto Bay, Florida City, and Sunny Isles Beach were on the bottom of the list with the lowest rate of DUI crash deaths. 

From 2012 to 2017, fatalities from DUI accidents declined in Florida by 6 percent. Miami-Dade County and Broward County were among those with the lowest numbers of DUI accident deaths. In 2017, a total of 515 DUI crash deaths occurred in the state of Florida. Sarasota had one of the highest shares of these fatalities among Florida cities, with a rate of 12.2 deaths per every 100,000 residents. 

Lakeland and Jacksonville had the second- and third-highest DUI crash death rates, respectively, among large cities in the state, though their rates were still about two times lower than that of Sarasota. Miami had one of the lowest rates of DUI deaths in the state at 0.25 deaths per every 100,000 residents. 

Overall, Destin was the deadliest state in Florida as far as DUI accident fatalities. The city had a DUI death rate of 13.54 deaths per every 100,000 residents, which was six times the state average. Hamilton County was the deadliest county, with 20.27 DUI deaths per every 100,000 residents.
