Boy Suffers Serious Burns after his iPhone 6 Battery Exploded

April 15, 2019

Fifteen Year Old Boy From Brisbane, Australia Suffers Serious Burns after his iPhone Battery Exploded

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – according to an online news report at, emergency responders were called to the boy’s home due to burns he sustained from his iPhone 6 battery that exploded.*

Emergency responders arrived at the boys house and took him to an area hospital for emergency treatment.  He is currently in stable condition and left the hospital that same night.  The explosion happened while the boy was playing with his iPhone’s battery on Sunday, March 31, 2019.  The battery exploded due to the fact that the boy bent it. "It was an initial yellow explosion and then flames came from that,” he stated.

At the time of the explosion, the boy was not wearing a shirt. As a result, the battery acid splashed onto his chest, causing him to sustain superficial burns.  However, it should be pointed out that lithium-ion batteries that are used in cell phones do not contain acid.  Accordingly, the acid that burned the boy was another type of corrosive chemical.

"They (doctors) said that if the explosion happened in my eyes or acid dripped on my eyes, I most likely would've been blinded," the boy noted.

When the explosion occurred, the boy’s mother heard her son screaming and immediately called emergency personnel.

This incident occurred just a few months following a man from Ohio who sustained serious burns after his iPhone XS Max burst into flames and exploded when the phone was in the man’s pocket.  The man noted that there was a strange odor coming from his pocket while he was eating lunch. According to the man, he all of a sudden felt a “large amount of heat” and noticed “green and yellow smoke” coming from his cell phone.
