Trials Rule that Roundup Caused Individuals to Contract Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Damages in One Case Awarded to Victim
According to an online article at articles.mercola.com, trials establish that victims contracted Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma caused by Monsanto’s Roundup.*
On August 10, 2018, a jury found in favor of a plaintiff in a historic case against Monsanto, which is currently owned by Bayer AG. The man filed his lawsuit against the corporate giant and is the first of thousands of cases pending against the company. The plaintiff in the first case asserted that he contracted Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after using Roundup. This plaintiff claims that he sprayed approximately 150 gallons of Roundup about 20 to 40 times annually due to his job as a groundskeeper for a school district in California. He did so from 2012 through 2015. In this lawsuit, which was filed in 2016, he noted that he is too ill to work, and that Monsanto hid the real health hazards associated with the use of Roundup.
According to the court’s ruling, Monsanto “acted with malice or oppression” and was responsible for “negligent failure” by failing to issue a warning to consumers regarding the fact that the week killer is carcinogenic. The jury issued a verdict of $289 million to be paid to the man, but the judge reduced the amount of damages to $78 million. An appeal was filed by Bayer/Monsanto.
On March 19, 2019, a United States jury issued a ruling that Roundup was a substantial factor in causing another plaintiff to develop Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In the second liability phase of the case, jurors are tasked with deciding whether Bayer/Monsanto was negligent and should pay monetary damages to this Roundup victim.
The man’s attorney said they were “very pleased that the jury unanimously held that the Roundup caused the Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.” This caused Bayer’s stock to drop substantially by 12.5%, which represents the largest “intraday loss” in sixteen years. This instantaneously caused a $9.1 billion of Bayer’s value.
The second part of the trial, which determined whether Bayer/Monsanto should pay the victim a monetary damages award for contracting the deadly cancer, rendered an $80 million verdict.
