Tennessee Residents Looking for Answers about Asbestos Contamination

March 28, 2019

CHATTANOOGA, TN. – According to an online news report from, residents in a town in Tennessee are looking for answers about asbestos contamination in the area where they live. The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed that a mill yard in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is contaminated with asbestos.*

The EPA confirmed that R.L. Stowe Mill Yard is contaminated with asbestos. Residents in the area were alerted to the issue by the local public works department, and they do not yet know exactly what the information means for them.

One resident says she has lived in the area near the mill yard for three years and liked the area because it was quiet and in a convenient location. She says she noticed the mill yard and did not think much about it but now is wondering how it is going to affect her health.

“I mean could it be in our water?” she asks about asbestos contamination. “Could it be in the air?”

The EPA indicates that the asbestos fibers from the mill were released in the air and can still be released when the materials is agitated. The Chattanooga Public Works Department said it did not yet know how large of an issue the contamination was or how concentrated contamination was at the site.

The City of Chattanooga is reportedly developing a plan to address with issue along with the Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau and the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation. Chattanooga officials say residents can contact them with questions and concerns.
