Honda Recalls 1.1 Million Vehicles Equipped with Faulty Takata Airbag Inflators

March 23, 2019

UNITED STATES – According to an online report from npr.org, Honda recalled over one million Acuras and Hondas in the U.S. that are equipped with faulty airbag inflators.  These inflators, if an airbag deploys, can explode and cause projectiles of sharp metal to strike a driver and their passengers.

Honda has recently announced that it is recalling approximately 1.1 million automobiles on Tuesday, March 11, 2019, which marks the latest in a number of recalls linked with Takata, the supplier of airbag inflators.

Takata is also associated with the biggest automobile recall in United States history.  Over thirty seven million automobiles that contained fifty million defective Takata airbags are subject to that recall, per the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The agency indicates that at least fifteen people have died in the U.S. due to defective air bag inflators.  Over two hundred have been injured stemming from these faulty devices.

Back in 2017, Takata agreed to pay one billion dollars to settle with the United States Justice Department for having concealed the dangerous defects from the public. The recall on Tuesday would not have occurred had Takata disclosed the defect and immediately did something about it.

The sad part of this story is that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration, some of the airbag inflators that the company recalled in the first recall replaced older versions that had the same defect.

According to npr.com, “[a] timeline submitted to the NHTSA as part of Honda's recall report shows the company launched an investigation into the flawed safety feature in April 2018, after it learned about a crash that had happened a few months earlier. Honda said that the precipitating accident involved a 2004 Honda Odyssey with a replacement inflator that ruptured when the air bag deployed and injured the driver's arm.”
