Florida Man Dead After Being Fatally Injured by a Vape Pen

March 21, 2019

United States –According to an online news report at, a man from St. Petersburg, Florida succumbed to his injuries after the vape pen he was using exploded in his face, launching projectiles that lodged into his cranium.

The official cause of the man’s death was “projectile wound to the head,” per a Tampa Bay Times news report.  The accident occurred in May of last year at the St. Petersburg, Florida man’s home. The news report indicates that the vape pen exploded in the man’s face, ultimately causing a fire in the man’s bedroom. The manufacturer of the vape pen is Smok-E Mountain Mactan, and was stated to have been the “mod” form of the product.  The vape company is located in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

In addition to head trauma, the man was also uncovered by emergency personnel as having suffered thermal injuries or burns on about eighty percent of his body. Although emergency personnel found extensive burn damage to the man’s bedroom, his autopsy revealed that the fire produced little smoke.

This causality isn’t the first of its kind.  There are actually several incidents that have been reported where e-cigarettes caused injuries to its consumers.  Back in early winter of 2017, an Idaho man lost his teeth and sustained serious burns to his face when his e-cigarette pen exploded on his face.  Moreover, in 2016, a New York woman sustained third degree burns to her body after her vape pen exploded while it is was in her pocket as was in the car returning from a trip to a hair salon.

Explosions are thought to be caused by defective batteries in these devices as well as the devices warming up too quickly due to overly fast chargers.  Some injuries have also occurred due to product misuse.
