Honda Recalls One Million Acuras and Hondas Due to Defective Airbags

March 17, 2019

United States – according to apr.org, Honda is recalling over one million Acura and Honda vehicles in the U.S. due to air bag inflators that if activated, have a risk of explosion and the release of sharp pieces of metal at drivers and passengers of whom the airbags are meant to protect.

In an announcement by the company that was made on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, it recalls 1.1 million vehicles, which marks the latest in a number of recalls that are associated with Takata, the company that provides Hondas and Acuras with the air bag inflation device.

Takata is currently a company that is associated with the most recalls in United States history.  About thirty seven million vehicles containing approximately fifty million of the defective airbags are subjects of the recall, according to the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  According to the NHTSA, it is confirming that fifteen individuals in the United States have been killed as a result of Takata’s air bag inflators, and about two hundred people have been injured.  Back in 2017, Takata paid one billion dollars in a settlement with the United States Justice Department for having concealed the air bag defects from consumers.

According to a letter from NHTSA that was sent to Honda on Monday, March 11, 2019, some of the air back inflation devices subject to the recall were actually installed to fix issues with more dated inflators, those of which were the subject of the earlier Takata recall.

This is the reason why, according to Honda, that the total amount of Hondas and Acuras that have the defective airbags won’t change. However, the total amount of recalled inflation devices in all of the affected Acuras and Hondas will surge to approximately twenty one million, per Honda.
