Study: Memphis, TN, Intersections Among Worst in Nation for Distracted Driving
MEMPHIS, TN. – A recent study ranks two intersections in Memphis, Tennessee, among the worst in the nation for distracted driving, according to an online news report published at wmcactionnews5.com. The study was conducted by LYTX, which is a company specializing in safety analytics that provides dash cameras for commercial vehicles.
The study found that two intersections in Memphis were in the top five worst in the United States as far as cell phone use by commercial drivers. These intersections were Lamar and Holmes and South Lauderdale and Mallory. Lamar and Holmes was No. 4 on the list, and South Lauderdale and Mallory was No. 1.
LYTX came up with the ranking by studying camera footage and data collected in more than 500,000 commercial vehicles. Federal law prohibits truck drivers from using their phones while driving, stating that they need to use hands-free technology, instead.
“The entire goal is to make the roads safer,” said Kyle Warlick, LYTX data analyst. “Within the company, they have coaches, and the coaches review these clips with the drivers and say, ‘Here’s what you did wrong, and here’s the behaviors that you displayed that were dangerous.’”
The LYTX cameras equipped in commercial vehicles start recording when the driver applies the brakes suddenly or swerves from a lane of travel. The company noted more than 200 episodes of commercial drivers using their cell phones while driving at the South Lauderdale intersection and the Lamar intersection in Memphis.
LYTX found that as a whole, Memphis was the No. 8 city for most distracted driving in the country.
