Fourth of July Fireworks Mixes Fun with Potential Danger

July 04, 2012

We hope that everyone will enjoy the July 4th celebrations, and that you and your family stay safe. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fireworks injuries each year.

In 2007, the Fire Protection Association documented almost 10,000 fireworks-related injuries. Children under the age of 15 make up about 40 percent of these injuries and those under the age of 20 make up 58 percent of the injuries. The injuries from fireworks can encompass permanent burns and even death. If these firework accident victims had followed some simple safety recommendations, some of these injuries may have been prevented.

Safety Tips For Using Fireworks:

  • Only use fireworks outside and avoid using them near dry materials like grass or anything else flammable.
  • Make sure there is an adult present when children under the age of 16 are lighting fireworks.
  • Do not drink alcohol while using fireworks.
  • Only buy fireworks from reliable suppliers.
  • Never light fireworks near anybody who is smoking.
  • Have some sort of fire extinguishing device handy.

Not only do fireworks endanger people, they are responsible for thousands of fires every year. In 2008, there were an estimated 22,500 fires started from fireworks. These fires resulted in one death, 40 injuries and $42 million in property damage.

Injuries as a result of fireworks can be caused by negligence or defective manufacturing of the firework device. If you or a loved one has been injured in a fireworks-related incident, you should contact an experienced personal injury attorney to discuss your case.

You may have a right to financial compensation for your injuries through a product liability claim against the manufacturer, distributor or seller, and/or a personal injury claim or lawsuit against a negligent user, or a wrongful death case if fireworks cause an injury, death or fire.
