Lawsuit Filed After Savannah State Student Killed
SAVANNAH- Wjcl.com writes that the parents of a college student, Rebecca Foley havefiled a lawsuit against Colonial Village for having negligent security when the student was killed. Reports indicate that hundreds of calls were made to emergency services from the complex over the three years prior to Foley’s murder.*
The owners of the building were out of state, and despite the security issues, they did not take steps to make their tenants safer and protect the local residents.
The attorney for the family stated that the building’s parking area was not well lit and that the owners did not install a security gate, hire a security guard or place security cameras in their building. The attorney said that if the building had proper security, then Foley would not have been killed.
Within the three years before Fowley’s murder, law enforcement investigated 574 reports at the complex. The crimes included burglaries, reports of gunshots, robberies, armed robberies, aggravated assaults, and one report of a rape. Just one month before the murder, another shooting took place at the property.
Foley was 21 when she was pulled into the building’s parking lot as she checked her mailbox and was shot by two men who were waiting in the dark and planning an armed robbery.
The apartment complex is accused of creating a “safe haven” for criminals in the area.
Last November, the men who carried out the murder, Roderick Parrish and Jordan Campbell, were sentenced to life in prison. While the Statute of Limitations on personal injury claims in the state of Georgia is only 2 years, the deadline is extended to six years when the civil case grows out of a criminal matter.
