Latest Takata Air Bag Recalls Affect 1.7 Million Vehicles in U.S.
UNITED STATES – The latest Takata air bag recalls affect 1.7 million vehicles in the United States, according to an online news story posted by businessfactstoday.com. Numerous deaths and serious-injury events have been linked to the air bags, which can explode and send metal pieces flying into vehicle cabins.
Takata air bags have been the subject of the biggest round of vehicle recalls in the history of the United States. In the first two months of 2019 alone, approximately 10 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled. About 70 million are expected to be recalled in total by the end of 2020.
The U.S. recalls are being managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, beginning in 2001. Takata filed for bankruptcy over the recalls and sold almost all of its assets.
In this latest wave of the recalls, affected vehicles include models from Subaru, Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler, Tesla, and Ferrari. This includes the following models:
- Subaru – Forester, Legacy, and Outback models manufactured from 2010 to 2014;
- Mercedes – Models manufactured from 2010 to 2017;
- Volkswagen – Audi and Passat models manufactured from 2015 to 2017;
- BMW – Models manufactured from 2000 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2015;
- Daimler – Vans manufactured from 2015 to 2017;
- Tesla – Model S models manufactured from 2014 to 2016; and
- Ferrari – Models manufactured from 2014 to 2018.
Affected vehicle owners will be notified by the respective manufacturers. Owners can also go to the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to check whether their vehicles are subject to current recalls.
