Repairing Your Motorcycle After an Accident

March 02, 2019

After a vehicle accident, you’re likely wondering how you will go about getting your motorcycle repaired. There are some steps you should know about when it comes to motorcycle repair that will help you ensure the process is conducted properly.

As soon as possible after your accident, you should take your motorcycle to a shop that you trust to determine if the bike is repairable. You might find that the insurance company you’re working with has a shop it wants you to go to, but you ordinarily do not have to take that recommendation. If you’re not sure what shop to use, you can start by calling the dealer that sold you the motorcycle.  It is very important that if you choose your own body shop, that you take it to a reputable one.

When you have a shop in mind, you will need to obtain an estimate to send to the insurance company. The company might request more than one estimate in order to determine what is reasonable for the repairs. Normally, the insurance carrier will agree with a mechanic on a price and then repair your bike.

After your bike is finished, you’ll need to make sure that the repairs have been performed correctly. Look over the motorcycle carefully, and test it to be sure there are no issues. If the bike is not fixed, or you encounter any issues while you’re testing the bike, you should return to the shop for additional repairs and have the shop notify the insurance carrier immediately.

Sometimes after an accident, the cost to repair the motorcycle is higher than its market value.  In such situations, your motorcycle would be "totaled," and you are entitled to the book market value of your motorcycle. The insurance company will convey to you its view of value of your bike and present that offer to you, but you do not need to accept this initial offer. Make sure to do your own research to determine the fair value of your motorcycle. At Montlick & Associates, we often assist our clients with handling property damage claims.
