Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Weighing Options for E-Scooters

February 09, 2019

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. – According to an online news story reported at sun-sentinel.com, the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is weighing its options for to e-scooters. The city has allowed e-scooters for a period of time, and the City Commission is about to decide whether to continue allowing them or to ban them.*

Currently, Fort Lauderdale is in the minority when it comes to e-scooters. Most cities in the state of Florida do not allow them. In their next meeting, Fort Lauderdale City Commissioners will be discussing whether the trial scooter program in the city has been a success or a failure.

They will also be discussing and voting on a ban for the scooters during the Spring Break period. Some city officials do not want the scooters around when crowds of spring breakers descend into the area.

As far as the overall fate of the vehicles, city residents have mixed feelings. Some residents, like Priscilla Juranitch, say the scooters are a fun way to travel around.

“They’re a blast!” Juranitch said in an email to Fort Lauderdale City Hall. “And not just for tourists. We’ve been watching the growing numbers of users scootering around the city and finally decided to try it. It has now become a regular weekend activity for my husband and me. Whatever you do, don’t take them away.”

However, other residents are not so keen on the scooters. Some, like resident John Rhoades, say the scooters are a hazard.

“I’m now dodging skateboards, rollerbladers, bikes, Segways, other walkers, joggers, and now electric scooters,” Rhoades said in an email to Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. “It’s become a walking nightmare, and someone is going to get killed.”
