CSX Settles Georgia Train Crash Case with Film Crew Member’s Family

February 03, 2019

CHATHAM COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news story published at wjcl.com, CSX Transportation has settled a Georgia train crash case with the family of a film crew member. The crew member was killed in 2014 while on set for a movie near Jesup, Georgia.*

The crash took place on February 20, 2014, on the CSX train tracks above the Altamaha River by Jesup. A movie crew was on the tracks that day shooting for a film about singer-songwriter Gregg Allman. The movie, titled “Midnight Rider,” was to star William Hurt, Eliza Dushku, and Tyson Ritter. Sometime during the filming, a train ran through the set and struck a young camera assistant.

Sarah Jones, 27, was killed in the crash. Jones’s family then filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Chatham County Court against CSX, the producers of the movie, and other entities. In July 2017, after a trial on the case, a jury found in favor of Jones’s parents to the tune of $11 million. CSX then filed an appeal.

In January, the litigation came to a close with the announcement of a confidential settlement between CSX and Jones’s parents. The amount awarded in the settlement has not been disclosed. The family released a statement thanking people for their support and expressing relief about the resolution.

“This has been a long journey, and we’re deeply grateful for the support we’ve received from family, friends, and members of the film community,” Richard Jones said. “We’re relived that the lawsuit has concluded.”

After the 2014 accident, the movie’s production company tried to gain access to start filming in Savannah, Georgia, but then discontinued the project.
