Motorcyclists Vulnerable in Georgia Traffic Collisions

February 01, 2019

GEORGIA – As reported online by a news story from 13wmaz.com, motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injury during traffic collisions in the state of Georgia. Drivers on Georgia’s roadways can follow a few tips to help share the road with motorcyclists and prevent deadly accidents.

Motorcyclists have a 28-times higher chance of dying in a traffic collision that other motorists, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Georgia, an average of 10 percent of all fatal traffic crashes involve motorcyclists, a statistic reported by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

Motorcyclists can help protect themselves by always wearing a proper helmet and by paying attention to their surroundings at all times. However, vehicle drivers also share responsibility for the rate at which motorcyclists are injured or killed in traffic collisions.

Drivers should give motorcyclists more room on the roads, NHTSA says, particularly when following, merging, or changing lanes. Drivers should also be patient around motorcycles and understand that turn indicators might not shut off as quickly as they do on cars. Drivers should make sure motorcyclists are actually turning before trying to drive forward or pass a motorcycle with a turn signal flashing.

One motorcyclist who almost became part of the state’s statistics agrees with these safety tips. Jason Kerr, of Houston County, Georgia, was struck by a driver who then left the scene on South Houston Lake Road and Smithville Church Road in Warner Robins, Georgia. He was ejected from his bike and believes his helmet is the reason he survived the accident.

“That full face helmet saved my life,” Kerr said. “With half shells, if my face would have hit the ground, I would have been pretty ate up.”
