Ford Recalling 874,000 Trucks Due to Block Heater Fires

January 27, 2019

UNITED STATES – Carmaker Ford is recalling 874,000 trucks due to potential block heater fires, according to an online news report from automobilefanatics.com. The heaters can potentially short circuit and ignite, according to reports.*

The recall affects Ford F-150 trucks and Ford Super Duty trucks that are equipped with block heaters. These heaters do not come standard in the vehicles, so not every owner is affected. Trucks with installed block heaters might be susceptible to vehicle fires due to issues with the heaters’ cables.

The recall applies to the following models that have block heaters:

·2015 – 2019 Ford F-150 trucks manufactured at the Dearborn’s Rogue facility from March 18, 2014, to November 17, 2018;

·2015 – 2019 Ford F-150 trucks manufactured at the Kansas facility from August 21, 2014, to November 17, 2018;

·2017 – 2019 Ford Super Duty trucks manufactured at the Ohio facility from February 5, 2016, to November 17, 2018; and

·2017 – 2019 Ford Super Duty trucks manufactured at the Kentucky facility from October 8, 2015, to November 17, 2018.

The splice connectors in the heater cables can corrode because of contact with contaminants or weather conditions. This corrosion can lead to short-circuiting and failure of the cables. The cables might then spark and ignite.

Ford says there have been no accidents associated with the issue, as the block heaters require the vehicles to be in park and plugged into a power source. As part of the recall, owners will be able to have their heaters tested at their local Ford dealerships, and service technicians will replace any damaged connectors. The technicians will also apply insulation to the connectors to protect them from future corrosion.
