Company Recalls Bicycles for Steerer Tube Collar Issues

January 20, 2019

UNITED STATES – The bicycle company Specialized is recalling certain bicycles because of issues with the steerer tube collars, according to an online news report published at The steerer tubes can crack and result in a loss of control for a person riding one of the bicycles.*

Specialized has gathered reports from consumers and has come to the conclusion that some of its bicycles need to be recalled because of problems with the steerer tube collars. They could be prone to corrosion and cracking due to stress, and if they crack, riders can experience sudden inability to steer and loss of control. The issue can lead to serious crashes and injuries, though Specialized did not say whether anyone has been injured.

Affected by the recall are the following Specialized bikes sold between September 2016 and December 2018:

  • Roubaix
  • Ruby
  • Diverge
  • Sirrus

Most bicycles manufactured by Specialized for 2017, 2018, and 2019 are equipped with its Future Shock front road suspension, which could be contributing to the problem. People who own one of the recalled bikes are encouraged to discontinue use immediately and to take their bicycles to a local Specialized retailer for free repairs. The retailer will replace the steerer tube collar with one that has an adjusted torque setting to improve the piece’s strength.

Specialized has reportedly notified the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission of the issue and is working with the CPSC on a statement to formally announce the recall. The CPSC is not posting new recall information on its website right now, however, because of the government shutdown.
