What to Know About Pedestrian Safety in Georgia

January 16, 2019

With growing numbers of pedestrians killed or injured in traffic accidents, both drivers and pedestrians can benefit from some reminders about pedestrian safety in Georgia.

Many pedestrian accidents occur because of distraction or lack of visibility. Drivers and pedestrians are often distracted by their phones or other devices and are not paying attention on the road. And many drivers are not able to see people walking on the roadways at night, which increases the possibility of accidents.

Officials in Georgia say pedestrians always need to wear light, bright clothing and reflective items at night to allow drivers to easily see them on the road. They also need to pay attention when crossing roads and try to achieve eye contact with oncoming drivers before stepping into the roadway. Law enforcement officers and county coroners in the state say they see too many accidents caused by people looking down at their phones, not paying attention before they enter the road.

Pedestrians also need to always be inside of designated crosswalks. Sometimes, crosswalks are not available. But numerous accidents take place near crosswalks that people were not using. Pedestrians will always be safer inside a crosswalk than running in the middle of a road.

The responsibility for safety is not all on the shoulders of pedestrians, however. Drivers also need to stay off their phones and keep close eyes on their surroundings. Drivers have to be aware of people on sidewalks, shoulders, and walkways and understand that some people might not cross the road as quickly as others. People in wheelchairs and people using canes will need more time to cross.

Georgians can help to keep each other safe by practicing some patience and using good judgment on the roads.
