Georgia Becomes First State to Provide ‘Stop the Bleed’ Kits at All Public Schools

December 18, 2018

GEORGIA – According to an online news report from news4jax.com, all public schools in Georgia are now equipped with “Stop the Bleed” kits that can save lives during of a serious bleeding event. Georgia is the first state in the U.S. to outfit all public schools with the kits and train school staff members on how to use them.*

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that uncontrolled post-trauma bleeding is the leading cause of potentially preventable death among trauma patients. A person can bleed out in as little as two minutes, the CDC says, and bleeding intervention can save a person’s life. The national campaign Stop the Bleed has been working to train lay people around the U.S. how to stop uncontrolled bleeding in trauma situations, as well as provide them the tools to do so, in the valuable time before paramedics arrive.

Stop the Bleed kits are now available at every public school in Georgia, which is a first in the country. The kits include tools and supplies like gloves, gauze, dressing, tape, pads, shears, and a tourniquet. The Georgia Trauma Commission provided 29,000 kits to schools across the state, under the requirement that training be completed by at least 10 staff members in each school.

The training — provided by volunteer nurses, doctors, EMS crew members, and Homeland Security — includes identification of life-threatening bleeding, instructions for use of all the kit supplies, and instruction on when to use a tourniquet. So far, more than 60,000 educators in Georgia have completed the training.

At St. Marys Middle School in St. Marys, Georgia, the kits and training have already saved three lives: one during a playground injury, another during a school stabbing, and a third in an unknown accident.
