Residents Urge County to Make Safety Improvements to Dale Drive in Silver Spring
SILVER SPRING- The localdmv.com writes that pedestrian accidents have been impacting Montgomery County, and residents are now pushing to have their officials make the necessary changes to improve roadway safety.*
There have been several recent accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians in Silver Spring. Statistically, there is a rise in crashes this time of the year. The residents who are part of the Dale Drive Safely Coalition do not accept that the accidents have to happen. The organization’s co-chair, Corrine Hart, says that there are steps that can be taken to make the road safer.
Dale Drive is often used by commuters who are connecting to larger roadways such as Georgia Avenue or Coleville. The speed limit on Dale is currently 30 miles per hour, and residents say this is too fast. The street does not have sidewalks, and there are frequent accidents on the road. Hart says that putting in sidewalks would make her and her children feel safer when they were walking in their neighborhood or going to a local park. Hart says she was nearly struck by a car on one occasion as she crossed the street at the crosswalk while pushing a stroller.
The Montgomery County officials showed the community suggested plans for pedestrian islands on the street. The plan is based on a pedestrian safety study.
The county is looking for input from locals about how to improve road safety in the area. The county’s transportation department has posted an online survey to collect information from residents in order to develop the “Dale Drive pedestrian facility improvement project.”
