Fight Between Passenger, Driver Sends Bus Crashing Off Bridge in China

November 17, 2018

BEIJING, CHINA – According to an online news report from katu.com, a fight between a passenger and a bus driver October 28 in Beijing sent the bus crashing off a bridge and into the Yangtze River. Officials do not believe any of the people on board the bus survived.

Chongqing city police have released a surveillance video from the bus (most buses in China have video surveillance) showing the events that transpired before the crash. On the morning of October 28, a female passenger on a city bus approached the bus driver and ask him to pull over because she missed her stop. The bus driver refused, and the passenger began to argue with him. The verbal argument turned physical after the passenger hit the driver on the head with her cell phone.

The driver took his right hand off the steering wheel and fought back against the passenger. The driver grabbed the passenger’s arm to prevent her from striking him again and cranked the steering wheel to the left. The bus veered left across several lanes of traffic, hit an oncoming vehicle, and smashed through a bridge guardrail, flying off the bridge into the Yangtze River below.

Rescue crews lifted the wrecked bus from the river three days later, on October 31. There were 15 people on the bus when it crashed, including the driver, and 13 bodies have been recovered from the river at this time. The victims’ names have not been released. Two people remain unaccounted for, and officials do not expect they survived following the bus accident.

Wanzhou district police said in a statement that the behaviors of both the driver and the passenger seriously endangered public safety and violated the law. The passenger involved has been identified as a 48-year-old woman. The driver has not been identified.
